September - December
- Register at any university jobshops & consider doing a range of temporary jobs for work experience.
- Check your tax and insurance situation with a careers advisor, the Inland Revenue or contact your local Tax Office if not already done so.
- Register at your university careers centre for career & job information.
- Research jobs, companies & sectors on the Internet & in careers centre.
- Explore labour market information from careers advisors & the Internet
- Attend local careers service events & workshops.
- Update your CV.
- Apply for relevant vacation jobs.
- Apply for Xmas work placements.
- PGCE applicants should contact schools to observe, work with classes or volunteer during the year.
- Social work students should consider voluntary work, during the year & vacations.
- If planning a placement year, identify companies & apply early, ask your department if they can help with placements.
January - March
- Book time with a careers advisors
- Use computer aided careers software, e.g. Prospects & discuss with careers advisors.
- Use careers guides, directories & casebooks at careers centres.
- Research jobs, companies, sectors on the Internet & in careers centre.
- Attend careers service events & workshops.
- Attend Careers Fairs and Milkround events.
- Update your CV.
- Apply for relevant vacation jobs.
- Start researching postgraduate study overseas in the US and elsewhere. The process may take 18 months.
- Check careers centre information for summer placements & interviews.
- Apply for summer vacation jobs, consider work experience in your chosen career for networking & experience.
- Apply for summer placements, related to career options, some may be potential sponsorship opportunities.
- Consider voluntary sector work or overseas work.
April - June
- Apply for relevant vacation jobs, work experience, voluntary work, overseas activities if not already done so.
- Apply for any overseas postgraduate courses & scholarships in the US and elsewhere. Some scholarships have closing dates 12 months before course entry.
- Law students apply for training contracts, if not already done so.
- Attend Careers Fairs and Milkround events.
- Register with job agencies on the Internet.
July - August
- Help on playschemes if interested in work with children.
- Work experience, voluntary work, overseas activities &/or travel.
