September - December
- Get actively involved in student activities, as this will help you make the most of university life and will give you experience for your CV and work later on.
- Learn computer skills if necessary.
- Prepare a CV for term time, part-time and vacation work.
- Check your CV with a careers advisor.
- Register at your university or college careers centre & any university jobshops for temporary work, part-time & vacation work (more than 15 hours a week is not recommended).
- Consider voluntary work as an option.
- Attend careers events & workshops.
- Attend Careers Fairs & work experience fairs throughout the year and prepare for them before you go.
- Check your tax and insurance situation, if you are working part-time, with a careers advisor, the Inland Revenue or contact your local Tax Office
January - March
- Identify your skills, interests, abilities, values & consider options.
- Book time with careers advisors to discuss ideas & resources for your specialist areas.
- Use computer aided careers software, e.g. Prospects & discuss with careers advisors (short version of Prospects available in all university careers service).
- Find out about prospective careers from careers advisors, internet resources, libraries & course tutors, where appropriate.
- Start to develop a network of contacts for career information, including past students.
- Prepare & check your draft CV with a careers advisor.
- Attend Careers Fairs.
- Consider voluntary work or overseas work during the summer.
- Apply for summer work abroad or in the UK.
April - June
- Apply for summer work in the UK.
- Attend Careers Fairs.
- Consider your options for 2nd year.
- Find out what previous graduates are doing now.
- Review labour market information to understand job market, from careers advisors & Internet.
July - August
- Opportunities for work experience, voluntary work, travel, short Gap Year opportunities, employment or holidays.
