Schools general resources

The resources have been chosen with secondary schools and students in mind. There are many more specialist education sites which you may find on the Virtual Teachers Centre - National Grid for Learning or BECTa sites.

UK organisations, schools and resources
  • ACE (Advisory Centre for Education) - has a questions and answers section with FAQ and email service, online discussion forums, links and publications information.

  • Alliance for Inclusive Education (ALLFIE) - a national network of individuals families and groups working together to change the educational system so that all young people can be educated in a single mainstream education system. Also Young and Powerful, a group of disabled and non-disabled young people who fight to have their friendships, especially in schools, supported so they can support each other. Site includes also a list of useful contacts, information on training events and a resources list.

  • BECTa (British Educational Communications and Technology agency) - key site for UK technology and learning resources.

  • British Educational Research Association - includes information on publications, special interest groups, discussion area and links.

  • Bullying Online - help and advice for children, young people, parents and education staff, includes advice, online resources and links, online discussion forum, bullying guidelines issued by the National Association of Head Teachers and advice by email.

  • Centre for Studies on Inclusive Education and other inclusive education resources- including international information and links, legal issues, statistics on inclusion, mailing list and many useful addresses and links to support organisations, educational legal organisations, statutory and other organisations (UK site).

  • City Academies - draft prospectus - for sponsors (UK government scheme).

  • Council of Subject Teaching Associations - directory of associations and membership information.

  • Disability in Education - resources and training on inclusion for disabled children in schools.

  • Disability Rights Commission - supporting the implementation of the Disability Discrimination Act, including codes of practice for Part III and Part IV, SENDA.

  • Educate Online - UK school websites, education news and IT product promotions for schools, articles, telephone helplines, home education sites and resources, reviews and competitions page.

  • EduWeb - directory of school sites, education news and professional organisations, discussion groups and project partner groups, most information is for subscribers, including careers information from Key Clips, reference and word search, study guides, revision advice, foreign languages, business and technology.

  • Electronic Communication with Education Professionals - site is designed to give easy access to publications for schools issued by DfES, allows you to register and filter publications relevant to you.

  • General Teaching Council for England- fees, information, research and links.

  • General Teaching Council for Scotland- fees, information, research, links. Voluntary registration for teachers in Further Education.

  • General Teaching Council for Wales - in Welsh and English, includes professional conduct and practice, professional development, publications and links.

  • Home Education Advisory Service - includes information on the Handbook, Frequently Asked Questions, useful information and links to resources and other sites.

  • General Teaching Council for England - fees, information, research and links.

  • Learn.co.uk - from the Guardian newspaper, educational resources from the Guardian archive, (primary, secondary, topical lessons), also online lessons and tests for Key Stage 2, 3, 4, AS level plus, professional advice for teachers including good practice and online discussions.

  • Learning and Teaching Scotland - Information and resources for pre-school, primary and secondary education sectors in Scotland, especially useful for curriculum issues.

  • National Association of Governors and Managers - includes news and events, consultations, papers and publications, links and resources.

  • National Association for Special Educational Needs - includes newsletters, policies, consultation papers, links to relevant sites, events and research database for members.

  • National College for School Leadership - includes information and links to news, leadership research, headship programmes, discussions, useful publications and key links on standards and good practice.

  • National Educational Research Forum - to provide strategic direction for educational research nationally and to raise the quality, profile and impact of educational research. Its key objective is to develop a national framework, within which a coherent and relevant research programme in education can develop.

  • National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) - includes Education Management Information Exchange (EMIE), is a free information service for staff in local authority education departments in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, publications, EURYDICE (education information network for Europe), summaries of projects, research papers and articles.

  • OFSTED (Office for Standards in Education) - inspection reports and publications.

  • Schools Net - directory of independent schools and EFL colleges (UK site) - including information for parents on choosing schools and financial issues. NB if you are choosing an independent college, you may also find our section on standards and accreditation useful.

  • School Governors' Centre - information and links to support school governors from the DfES.

  • Scottish Council for Research in Education - online articles, support for teacher researchers, online databases, research reviews, links to research online and educational newsletters and journals.

  • Standards and Effectiveness Unit (SEU) - responsible for range of policies and strategies as well as improving and sustaining standards of attainment by all pupils; promoting diversity and innovation; monitoring performance in education and intervening where necessary.

  • Teacher Training Agency - information and resources for training providers and schools, trainee teachers, people returning to training, newly qualified teachers, teachers and includes information on the QTS Skills test.
Mainly resources for schools
  • Association for Educational Assessment - Europe - includes links to online discussion groups and to European indicators and benchmarks of quality of school education.

  • International Association for Educational Assessment (IAEA) - membership information and conferences.

  • BBC Education - wide range of useful information and resources for schools, Further Education and adults, also links to resources in current and past BBC programmes. Also available is a weekly news email from BBC Education Online and a section on education news.

  • British Educational Research Association - information on activities and research, map of educational research, discussion area and web links, selected articles online, publications and archive material.

  • Education-line - UK site for huge collection of articles, theories and documents on education and training issues, including national and international curriclum issues.

  • Education Otherwise - includes FAQ, members area, European contacts, legal information, useful organisations and links, online learning resources (UK site).

  • Education Links - directory of selected education sites found by subject and lifestage and reviewed, plus other links (on the Hobsons site). Many of the links are from the US.

  • EPPI-Centre Social Science Research Unit Institute of Education - Evidence for Policy and Practice Information Co-ordinating Centre (EPPI-Centre) is part of the Social Science Research Unit (SSRU), Institute of Education, University of London, includes 3 strands, Health Promotion (Research and dissemination of information relating to the evaluation of health promotion interventions (including a programme of research to evaluate educational interventions for HIV prevention in southern Africa) , Education (a centre for evidence informed policy and practice in education) and User Involvement investigating the generation and use of evidence of effectiveness as seen by people using health and education services).

  • eteach.com - teacher recruitment agency, with news, online discussions, teacher resources, advice on teaching and schools.

  • MirandaNet - strategies and resources for teacher education in information and communications technology.

  • The National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associations (NCPTA) - includes home and school magazine section.

  • NFER (National Foundation for Educational Research) - online research questionnaires, information on current projects, summaries of completed projects, research papers online, search CERUK (current educational research in the UK, database online).

  • Professional Development for Teachers - resources and some opportunities for bursaries.

  • Religious education resource page - includes reviews, links and useful organisations.

  • Schools Health Education Unit - surveys, reports, teaching materials, projects, news and links.

  • Teacher Grid UK - curriculum resources, teacher links, use of ICT, RE and Basic Skills.

  • TeacherNet UK - provides a service to support teachers in their continuing professional development, especially through professional profiling.

  • Teachers Evaluating Educational Multimedia - case studies, teachers' evaluations and publishers' product information.

  • Tesco SchoolNet - project aimed at involving school students which encourage children and young people to investigate their local environments and communities. There are also support materials for staff.
